Approval of the award of grant funding for the Cheltenham Playhouse Theatre
Decision Maker: Cabinet Member Economic Development, Wellbeing, Culture and Public Open Space

Decision:
To approve the release of a second grant of
£25,000 to the Cheltenham Playhouse Theatre, bringing the
total council support to £50,000
Reasons for the decision:
Following the initial £25,000 grant
awarded in June 2025 to support the Cheltenham Playhouse
Theatre’s urgent fundraising campaign, the venue continues to
face significant financial pressures. Despite progress made by the
new trustees in developing a long-term masterplan, further
immediate support is required to maintain operations and avoid
closure.
The council recognises the cultural and community value of the
Playhouse and is committed to helping sustain its future. This
second grant will provide vital short-term relief while the
trustees pursue longer-term funding and operational
stability.
Alternative options considered:
The Council could choose not to provide
additional support. However, this may result in the venue’s
closure, triggering financial liabilities for the Council as the
building’s owner, including business rates and maintenance
costs. The building’s limited alternative use could lead to
prolonged vacancy.
