Reasons for the decision:

The council made available £30,000 to allocate to local good causes to help the town celebrate and commemorate the Coronation. Grants of up to £3,000 were available on a match-funding basis for longer- term projects that helped to deliver these key themes:

  • Using the opportunity of the Coronation to bring people together, connecting people to foster new relationships and celebrating our diverse communities.
  • Using the opportunity of the Coronation to help improve the bio-diversity of Cheltenham green spaces and natural environment
  • Using the opportunity of the Coronation to help make Cheltenham a place where all our children and young people have the opportunity to thrive.

The Coronation Fund was open for applications from 20th March to 27th April 2023.  An assessment panel met on 17 May 2023 to assess the 23 Coronation Fund applications received and to make recommendations to the Cabinet Member Safety and Communities.  The panel comprised the Cabinet Member Safety and Communities; Angela Gilbert from Gloucestershire Rural Community Council and Richard Gibson, Corey McIntyre and Helen Down from the Communities and Place Division.

Reasons for the recommendations

The Coronation Fund applications received were for a total of over £58,114 from a budget of £30,000.  The criteria for assessing the bids were:

  • How the project will bring people together, connecting people to foster new relationships and celebrating our diverse communities.
  • How the project will help improve the bio-diversity of Cheltenham green spaces and natural environment
  • How the project will help make Cheltenham a place where all our children and young people have the opportunity to thrive
  • The project’s value for money in terms of its benefits versus the amount of grant requested

The panel identified 17 applications that met the criteria and recommended these for approval.  The total sum awarded was £30,014.
