Renewal of Great Crested Newt Licence

Decision Maker: Director of Community & Economic Development - Tracey Birkinshaw

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Decision:

To give approval for the renewal of Great Crested newt Licence via NatureSpace Partnership, granted by Natural England.  This is a countywide District Licence Scheme signed up to by all the local planning authorities in Gloucestershire.

Reasons for the decision:

Great crested newts and their habitats are legally protected in the UK.  Any development within 500m of a pond may affect newts.

When the developers bring forward proposals, where relevant, it is important that they can demonstrate that there is no risk to great crested newts or their habitats, there are three licensing options in the Cheltenham Borough Council area.  These are:

-       Joining the District Licence Scheme and being authorised by Cheltenham Borough Council as part of the planning (the renewal with Natural England is the subject of this decision); or

-       Applying directly to Natural England for a licence post-planning; or

-       By working with a registered ecologist under the low impact class licence.

Alternative options considered:

See above.
