Decision Maker: Cabinet Member for Safety and Communities

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Decision:

To award a community grant to the following organisation:  a grant of £10,000 to Cheltenham Alliance for Race Equity

Reasons for the decision:

Cheltenham Alliance for Race Equity (CARE) is a new partnership that has been formed with organisations from across Cheltenham and Gloucestershire has been created to tackle systemic and structural racism.

CARE will be working together to make Cheltenham a place where no-one is marginalised because of their ethnicity or culture, and to create equal and equitable opportunity and access for all without discrimination of any kind.

CARE came about via a motion at full council on 15 June 2020, when the council agreed the following:

Cheltenham Borough Council believes in action, not just fine words. In conjunction with the Police and Crime Commissioner, Cheltenham Borough Homes, Cheltenham Trust, Festivals and other partners, Cabinet is requested to look at holding a conference for Cheltenham’s BAME community organisations, to discuss how we might work closer together to challenge bias, both deliberate and unconscious, and racism in all its forms.

Due to the importance of the work of CARE, I have therefore agreed a grant of £10,000 to support them in their work and that our support will enable CARE to lever in additional funding.
